Plating is a chemical process of depositing various materials (typically metallic) onto a substrate that can be metal, ceramic or other materials. The plating process can be electrolytic or electroless. Properties of plating can vary greatly in terms of thickness, uniformity, lubricity, solderability, magnetic or non-magnetic, corrosion protection, hardness, wear resistance, color, brightness etc. depending on the choice of the plating process and the plating material. Plating is used for both functional and decorative purposes.
