What Is Nadcap, and Why It Matters That AST Is Now Accredited

If you’re in aerospace or defense manufacturing, you’ve heard the word Nadcap. Probably a lot. If you’re outside those industries, there’s a decent chance you’ve never heard it at all, even though it quietly shapes how an enormous amount of critical hardware gets made. Either way it’s worth understanding, because when a finishing supplier is Nadcap accredited, that tells you something real. It’s not marketing. It’s one of the hardest things to earn in this line of work.

And AST just earned it.

Okay, so what is it actually?

Nadcap stands for the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program. SAE International created it in 1990, and it’s run by the Performance Review Institute, a not-for-profit that works hand in hand with the industry to keep quality standards from slipping.

Here’s why it exists, in plain terms. Aerospace and defense parts don’t get to fail the way ordinary parts do. A finish that flakes off a patio chair is a minor annoyance. A finish that fails on a flight-critical component is a completely different category of problem; the kind nobody wants their name attached to. So, the industry needed a way to actually verify, not just take somebody’s word, that the shops running specialized processes like plating and chemical processing were doing them right. Every time. To spec.

That’s the whole point of Nadcap. Detailed, demanding audits run by technical people who genuinely understand the processes they’re inspecting. It’s not a rubber stamp. It’s widely considered one of the toughest quality benchmarks in all of manufacturing, and for a lot of aerospace primes, being Nadcap accredited isn’t a bonus point on a supplier scorecard. It’s the price of admission. No accreditation, no conversation.

What AST is accredited for

Two areas: Aerospace Quality System and Chemical Processing. Between them, these cover the two things that actually matter when you’re trusting a finishing shop with aerospace work. The quality system that governs how the whole operation runs, and the specific chemical processes that end up on your parts.

And the accreditation covers the full lineup of processes AST runs; each tied to the specs that govern it. The short version:

  • Electroless nickel to AMS 2404, AMS 2454, AMS-C-26074, ASTM B733, MIL-C-26074
  • Sulfamate nickel to AMS 2403, AMS 2424, AMS-QQ-N-290, and ASTM B689
  • Gold to ASTM B488, AMS 2422, MIL-DTL-45204, and MIL-G-45204
  • Silver to ASTM B700 and FED-QQ-S-365.
  • Tin to ASTM B-545 and MIL-T-10727 Type 1
  • Passivation to AMS 2700, AMS-QQ-P-35, ASTM A967, ASTM A380, and FED-QQ-P-35
  • Chromate conversion coating, to AMS 2473, AMS 2474, ASTM B449, MIL-C-5541, and MIL-DTL-5541.

If those spec numbers look familiar, that’s because they’re exactly the ones your engineers are pulling from when they write up a part. Being accredited to run these processes to those specs means AST hasn’t just said it can do the work. It’s been independently checked, by the organization the aerospace industry itself relies on, and confirmed to do it right.

Why you should care if you source finishing work

For engineers and procurement people, this takes a lot of uncertainty off the table. You’re not relying on a supplier’s own claim that they can hit a MIL spec. You’ve got third-party verification from the body the whole industry trusts to make that call. That means less risk, an easier supplier qualification process, and in plenty of cases it’s simply what your own customers require you to have in your supply chain anyway.

There’s also a less measurable thing it points to, which is culture. Nadcap isn’t a test you pass once and forget about. Keeping the accreditation means ongoing audits, continual improvement, and staying at that level year after year. It shows up in the everyday work, not just as a certificate on the wall. That part is harder to fake than any single audit.

Bottom line

Earning Nadcap accreditation for both Aerospace Quality System and Chemical Processing is a big deal for AST. But the more important part is what it means for the people who send us their parts. It means the processes you’re specifying are being run to the standards your industry actually demands, checked by the people whose job is to hold that line.
